I Am Super, Man reviewed by Chortle

Michael ConnelMaking an enthusiastic entrance, Michael Connell greeted an audience that was small – but also warm and responsive, thanks in no small part to Connell’s relaxed and pleasant demeanour.

Given the title, you may think that this is focussed entirely on the Man In Tights. But Connell does no more than gently swoop down on the theme, effortlessly weaving it into the narrative, letting it play an organic part.

This is old school stand-up, with practiced ease of movement from subject to subject. Connell discusses his job at council, movie pirating, rap, learning Japanese, REM, faxing, Shakespeare, Facebook, Captain America, Ready Steady Cook, circus arts, mysterious buns and the prospect of Telstra controlling gravity.

What is satisfying the way it is pulled together. Where others shoehorn, Connell weaves, making clever callbacks and drawing evocative parallels between different parts of his life, such as applying improv principles to office situations.

This is an hour or so of genial and funny chat from a cordial and highly likeable host.
